Value is the lightness or darkness of a color—and in this module, you’ll learn how to illustrate it with accuracy and precision. You’ll study the anatomy of shadows and learn my favorite value drill which will teach you how to design your shadows beautifully.
By the end, you’ll have the best value underpainting you’ve ever made—a powerful foundation for your next finished piece.
MODULE 3
Limited Palettes
In this module, you’ll learn how to work with two powerful limited palettes to unlock a full range of color. We’ll explore color mixing, temperature, and the surprising benefits of using just a few pencils.
By the end, you’ll have two stunning drawings that demonstrate just how much you can do with 2-3 colors!
MODULE 4
Expanded Palette & Techniques
In this module, you’ll build on your color and value foundation by strategically adding more pencils to your palette. You’ll learn how to plan your colors with purpose while exploring new colored pencil techniques.
By the end, you’ll have at least one full-color piece that showcase your growth—and starts to reveal your unique style and artistic voice.
MODULE 5
Communicating with Color
In this final module, you’ll learn how to use color intentionally to express emotion and meaning. We’ll explore color psychology and color schemes, and you’ll begin making bold, expressive choices that go beyond copying a photo.
By the end, you’ll have a finished piece that makes an impact—a meaningful step toward developing your personal style.

Along with earning a BFA in drawing and painting, I’ve spent years as both a student and teacher in classical art programs based on the same principles used by masters like Leonardo da Vinci and John Singer Sargent.
Unlike most colored pencil instructors—who are often self-taught and teach only what worked for them—I offer a time-tested, flexible approach. I tailor feedback to your goals, skill level, and personal style—never a one-size-fits-all formula.

During this 10-week session, many of our live demos will feature portraits. You’ll get to see how I organize values to create a strong likeness and how I mix expressive, believable skin tones—all in real time, with space to ask questions and get direct support as you work.

Throughout the recorded curriculum, you’ll find a wide range of simpler subjects—plants, flowers, etc.—demonstrated step-by-step. You’ll also have access to a curated library of photo references so you can choose subjects that genuinely inspire you and match your comfort level.
